We feel best results occur when parents / whānau, students and teachers work together and support one another in a shared endeavour. The key to the success of this relationship is effective communication.
Our open door policy means that parents / whānau are free at any time to make an appointment to meet with any of our team at a mutually convenient time.
From time to time, in a people-oriented activity such as education, there will be concerns.
When these occur, it is important that all parties involved work together to obtain a solution that is mutually acceptable and best for all concerned.
Our team is always happy to answer questions or queries via email or meet with you to discuss your concerns face to face, whenever possible.
If your child is absent from school we appreciate you logging into HERO and letting us know by clicking 'Reporting an Absence' on the Homepage. You can also ring the school on 327 8555 and leaving a message on our answering machine (line 2) or texting us on 027 2113009.
We also need to know why your child is away, as every absence is coded. Any unexplained absences are recorded as truant.
If you know in advance that your child is going to be away, you may want to contact their teacher. Just be aware that some teachers do not get time to check their messages in the morning as they are preparing for the start of the day.
We are excited to introduce our new communication and reporting system, HERO. An online sharing platform with a complementary parent app.
We have made this change to Hero for two reasons:
Hero has a strong Learning focus which will support both teachers, whānau and ākonga in the future.
Hero will streamline all communication between home and school, providing one way for whānau to access all school and learning information.
Hero allows schools to customise an online environment that enables teachers, students, and parents to view and share content anytime, anywhere on any device. The software is secure, easy to use and brings together all school-related information in one place.
With Hero, you can:
Read and comment on school notices sent to the class or groups your child is part of.
Respond to school notices such as surveys and trip permission requests.
View school term dates.
View a school calendar of events.
Notify the school if your child is absent or late.
Book your school interviews (from Term 2).
Customise your account by adding a profile image.
Select how you wish to receive notifications (in-app or via email).
Read and comment on posts relating to your child’s learning (coming in Term 1, 2026)
View information on your child’s progress and goals.
Our longer term plan is to develop Learning posts combined with curriculum information and goal-setting which will form an online report designed to build year-on-year so that over time you will have access to written posts, images, videos, work samples, and helpful resources all in one place.
Over the coming year, staff and students will be posting rich content to our Hero software. We are looking forward to sharing this with you, including you in your child’s learning journey.
For information about Hero including how to log in, go to the Hero website, or contact Bernice Peter (our Office Manager) at office@marton.school.nz.
We encourage you to get set up with the Hero App on your chosen device before school starts for the year. Please be aware we are learning how to use this new system too, and let us know if there are any issues!
Marton School also has a public facebook page where we share information with our wider community.
We meet with whānau at the start of each year before the term begins to get to know you and your child. Another whānau meeting is held near the end of Term 2 to share progress and celebrate achievements.
Whānau are welcome to make an appointment with their child's teacher at any time.
We send home two written reports each year. One at the end of Term 2 and the other at the end of Term 4.
