Special Needs and Abilities Programmes

Overview:
At Marton School we provide programmes for:
  • Children with significant learning difficulties across the whole curriculum.
  • Children who have difficulty in specific curriculum areas such as reading.
  • Children who have significant behaviour difficulties.
  • Children who can be expected to consistently achieve above their peers in one or more learning programmes.

Talk To Learn:

Talk To Learn is a language enrichment programme that helps children increase their ability to verbally communicate and make the right choices.

Reading Tutors:

This programme is designed to support and encourage children who may be experiencing some early reading difficulties.  It is used as an extra to the School Reading Recovery Programme.  At Marton School we are fortunate to have Community Support for this programme, using tutors who
have volunteered their time one morning a week for an hour.  They also meet on a regular basis to discuss techniques and how the programme is working.   The children read daily for about 15 - 20 minutes each.  These children have all showed improvement during their 5 week modules of at least one to three levels.

Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour: (R.T.L.B.)

Marton School has two onsite Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour. These are highly trained teachers who specialise in learning and behavioural concerns in students. The R.T.L.B.s work with both the teacher and caregivers to help bridge these concerns.

Reading Recovery.

Reading Recovery is an intensive reading programme run by a specialised teacher and aimed at junior students, for up to 20 weeks. The students are selected through their six year net testing.   Ongoing monitoring of pupil progress is maintained throughout their academic career.

Funding

Students who are identified with special needs are funded by a variety of sources including Ongoing Resourcing Service (ORS), Special Education Grant (SEG) and Targeted Funding for Educational Achievement (TFEA). Occasionally a student may be funded through the R.T.L.B. programme or by the school itself. This funding pays for things like:

  • Teacher Release Time
  • Teacher Aides
  • Special Computer Equipment
  • Specialised Resources

As well as these things, Marton School participates in Education Outside the Classroom for our special needs students, through programmes such as Halberg Sports and specialised technology modules, when they are made available.
