About Kiwi
Can
Welcome to the
Kiwi Can section of the Marton School website. The following is a brief overview
of what Kiwi Can is.
“Kiwi Can is a Foundation for Youth Development Programme”,
An ex policeman called Nick Tuatusi, from Auckland, decided to try and offer the youth in his area a life skills programme to reinstall the much needed values back into their lives. He looked at many different programmes and finally in 1999 helped develop and promote Kiwi Can. It is needs based, values orientated programme. Needs based means that Kiwi Can looks at topics the school feels are appropriate for their children at that time. This could be regarding a specific need in the school to help in some way with children’s attitudes or behaviour. The topics change each term. Some of the topics Kiwi Can have covered over the years range from: manners, respect, responsibilities, trust, teamwork, cooperation, perseverance, expressing yourself, power of the tongue, fairplay, self esteem…. The topic is reinforced throughout the lesson and the children participate in activities, role plays, creative games as well as general knowledge about N.Z. All these things are linked back to the topic being discussed. As well as this Kiwi Can tries to instil a sense of pride in being a New Zealander and the importance of being proud of ones self and country.
The programme
is offered in this area through the Rangitikei Kiwi Can Charitable Trust and is
delivered by 2 or 3 leaders, male and female, so the children are presented with
a positive role mode of each sex. It is all about positive reinforcement and
having fun as well as learning. The children receive Kiwi Can once a week for up
to an hour, one class at a time. Kiwi Can Leaders also supports many Outdoor
Education activities, such as camps and sporting occasions. It is available to
all age groups at the primary level and is spread throughout the country in
different areas, Auckland, Te Kuiti, Marton, Northland, Taumarunui, Opotiki,
Tauranga, Wellington, Timaru, Dunedin, Invercargill and Stewart Island.
It is a positive programme aimed at making a difference in the lives of the
children it teaches and it is great fun to deliver and be a part of an awesome
team.
Visitors and parents are welcome to attend a class, just let the school know and
we will be happy to see you.
